The New Zealand Under 21 Junior Black Sticks Squads were named on 12 May featuring 5 former Hawke’s Bay Representative and Hockey Academy Players. Central Districts also have two women named in the National squad – Michaela Curtis and Georgia Barnett who are both Manawatu based players. The former HB Players named were Sam Greaney, Rob Creffier and Brennan Alexander-Parker all now playing in Auckland; Ryan Cosgrove, now playing in Wellington; and Angus Hazlett, now playing in Canterbury.

Don Clark, Operations Manager for HB Hockey said “We are very proud of our Hawke’s Bay boys’ continued success. This is a true reflection of the value of our Academy programmes undertaken by these players and the sound coaching they received in Hawke’s Bay both through their representative careers and being involved with the Academy”.

All five players featured in the National Under 21’s tournament held in Hamilton with Sam Greaney returning to play in goal for Central Districts.

This year’s Central Districts U.21 squad was a very young but talented side. They achieved a feat that previous Central U.21 sides could not – winning two out of the six games – and their final match winning 11-2, a tournament high score line. With only two members too old to return next year, the remaining 15 have huge future potential for continued success for Central for the next few years ahead.

It was a pleasing step up for the team with four Hawke’s Bay players yet to take the field in an U.18 tournament event playing against NZ Black Sticks and doing themselves and their Region proud. Sam Greaney was given the honour of captaining the side this year and did so to the highest level, both on and off the field, gaining himself a well-earned place in the New Zealand U.21 selection.

The Central Women had quite similar results to the Men with winning 2 out of the 6 games but were able to finish one ahead in 6th place. This was an excellent result as they have come last in the past 3 years. The highlight of the week was defeating North Harbour 1-0 in a thrilling match to give them a three-way tie in their pool. The tie had to be separated by a penalty shootout 3 hours after the game had finished. Central won the shootout to put them into the playoff for 5th & 6th. Only 1 player from the team of 17 will be ineligible to play next year so will go into the competition with the hopes of finishing higher. The three Hawke’s Bay players now join the U.18 squad in preparation of the U.18 National Tournament to be held in July.

The Hawke’s Bay Hockey Winter competitions are now in full swing with a 10 % growth in player numbers. The largest increase is in the primary schools where 2 new schools have joined the Hastings based competitions. The number of players from existing hockey schools have also increased.

Players now total 840 Primary/Intermediate grade; 1255 Secondary; and 270 from the 5 HB Clubs. Hastings and Central HB players make up 54% of the player numbers and Napier Wairoa 46%.

Operations Manager, Don Clark, said that the increased exposure of Hockey, the success of the Black Sticks teams and the Hawke’s Bay Sponsors’ Partnership with the Black Sticks are all contributing factors to the growth. “We have also increased our staffing over the last 12 months resulting in greater time spent out in the community working at grass roots level with the schools.”

The Black Sticks Men held a training camp at Park Island in January and this was well received by the community with a large number taking advantage of the opportunity to meet the players face to face.

The Black Sticks Women will be training at Park Island from 16 to 23 May with a number of training sessions which are open to the public. They will also play three demonstration games scheduled for Thursday 17 May at 1-45 pm, Sunday 20 May at 3-00 pm and Monday 21 May at 7-00 pm. The public are invited to attend these games also at no cost.

Following the Sunday game the Black Sticks will be available to meet the public over an informal evening from 6-00 pm to 7-30 pm at Park Island.

Full details of the training and games can be found further down on this Web site.

Following a meeting of the clubs, schools and other stakeholders of Hawke’s Bay Hockey, held on Tuesday night, the Board of the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association Incorporated unanimously resolved to support the proposal to build a Tier One hockey facility at Sports Park Hawke’s Bay.

The Board recognises the need for a hockey turf in Hastings given 55% of the 2,200 hockey playing community come from the Hastings, Havelock North and Central Hawke’s Bay areas. To better meet the current needs of those players, caregivers, supporters, coaches and managers and to grow the sport in the Hastings area a hockey facility located more conveniently to them is essential and overdue.

The submission on the likelihood of an increase in participation from the Maori community due to the closer proximity of a hockey turf to many marae was compelling. Additionally, pressure can be taken off the wonderful but over-utilised facilities at Park Island.

While acknowledging that the desire and future need of the hockey community is that a further turf at Park Island will need to be developed in due course, an added bonus of the Sports Park facility is that it is a world-class hockey facility that can host top flight international games benefitting not only hockey but the Hawke’s Bay region as a whole.

In particular, the Board was strongly persuaded by the support and endorsement of Hockey New Zealand, New Zealand Maori Hockey Inc, Takitimu Maori Hockey and the unanimous approval of the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools Principals Association in conjunction with overwhelming support from schools, individuals and hockey clubs in both Napier and Hastings.

We encourage people from our hockey community to make submissions regarding this proposal through the Hastings District Council website.

Iain Taylor
Chairman
Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association Incorporated
