About

Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s Vision

To create a regional centre of excellence that promotes and develops the sport of hockey in Hawke’s Bay, thereby setting the benchmark for other sporting codes.

The Background of Hawke’s Bay Hockey

Hockey has been played throughout Hawke’s Bay by both men and women since the late 1800’s with archives showing representative teams competing for the Province since that time. Initially and for most of the past century, Hawke’s Bay Hockey operated as an umbrella Association with 3 sub-associations in Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay, then in 1977, the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association, in its present form, was formally incorporated.
For many years, hockey was primarily based at Marewa Park in Napier and Frimley Park in Hastings but with various other parks used throughout the Region. The completion of the artificial turf in 1990 (initially a sand-based turf) at Park Island saw not only a shift of Club hockey from Marewa Park, but also a dramatic change to the game in Hawke’s Bay. A second water turf was completed in 2004 and the original turf converted to a water-based turf in 2006

The Structure of Hawke’s Bay Hockey

All Hockey players competing in the HB Hockey run competitions – both Clubs and Schools – must be affiliated to the Association which is governed by an elected Board of seven.  The current Board is made up of the following people:

  • Iain Taylor – Chairman
  • Geoff Blackmore
  • Ro Hill
  • Andrew Knox
  • Steven Knox
  • Joss Prussing

Hawke’s Bay Hockey’s Facilities

The Association boasts two top-class water-based turfs, with a third being planned for construction in 2013.  The double-storey Smale Pavilion provides for administration offices, bar, café, lounge, mezzanine lounge, umpires room, four team changing rooms with hot shower facilities and excellent spectator seating for both turfs.  Grandstands are also provided for both turfs and a small practice turf is available.
